Tou’Ngou Hotel in Yaoundé, Cameroon, hosted from 2 to 5 April 2013 an important sub-regional workshop on allometric equations in Central Africa. The meeting was attended by about 75 world seasoned experts from research and training institutions, NGOs, Forest administration of COMIFAC countries and COMIFAC sub-regional branches.

Organized by COMIFAC under its REDD+ sub-regional project and supported by UN-REDD program, this workshop aimed at making an appraisal of scientific works in Central Africa on measuring and following-up forest carbon stocks, with a focus on allometric equations, in order to identify needs and shortages in the sub-region.

Reaching this important objective required the use of the participatory approach based on classical scientific presentations (exposés followed by questions) and round-table discussions. To this regard, the participants listened to 28 oral scientific communications in 4 thematic sessions, and were entitled to 4 posters and 2 round-table, namely:

♦ Session1 Appraisal of allometric equations in Central Africa

♦ Session2 Needs in terms of estimates precision and new tools to measure biomass

♦ Session3 « Estimating biomass: From tree scale to landscape scale”

♦ Session4 The various compartments of forest carbon: Trees, undergrowth, soil. »

♦ Round-table “Towards a national experts network on measuring and following-up forest carbon stocks”

♦ Round-table “Methodology for defining allometric equations at regional level in the Congo Basin”.

During 4 days of serious brainstorming on the different themes, the participants acquire better knowledge of allometric equations development stages in Central Africa. The participants end the meeting by formulating recommendations for a better follow-up of forest carbon stock and planning the establishment in the short term of an online platform for scientific collaboration based on the recommendations resulted from the first round-table and the definition of a regional methodology for allometric equations in Central Africa.
