WWF, GFTN and TRAFFIC coalition against illegal logging

Studies show that about 15 to 30% of timber traded globally is illegally sourced with tragic consequences for biodiversity integrity, the survival of local communities and the economy with losses in the range of 30 to 100 billion dollars. To address this situation, WWF, GFTN and TRAFFIC have decided to break the silence and join hands to tackle the issues of illegal logging, deforestation and forest degradation.

In recent years, the coalition has been involved in strengthening companies and institutions’ capacities to meet the challenges facing them, including: the illegal trade in forest products, non-compliance with the legal framework and requirements of the timber market. It has equally been working to ensure that the world's forests are preserved for future generations and that populations live in harmony with nature.

Specifically, the coalition’s focus is on developing marketing and responsible forest management tools and supporting companies in the process in close collaboration with these organizations, through training workshops and seminars

These courses help to provide answers to the major concerns including:

  • Timber trade flows from Asia-Pacific and Russia to the EU, the United States and Australia;
  • What exporters need to know about the EU timber regulation, the United States’ Lacey Act and the Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Act and relevant national laws on illegal logging and how to comply;
  • What information importers need from their suppliers;
  • Types of information required to help companies conduct responsible business;
  • Informative take-away documents to be shared with staff.

These concerns are addressed in a series of 12 year round modules implemented on all the continents. The modules are entitled:

  1. Introduction to international policies and conventions shaping the timber trade
  2. The Australian Illegal Logging Prohibition Act
  3. The EU Timber Trade Regulation
  4. Introduction to the US Lacey Act
  5. Diligence / Due Diligence and general guidelines
  6. Timber trade flows from Indonesia
  7. Timber trade flows from Vietnam
  8. Timber trade flows from China
  9. Timber trade flows from Laos

10. Training for trainers– Introduction

11. Training for trainers - Introduction to resources

12. Training for trainers – Effective training

Participants who took part in the courses continue to recognize the value added to their activities by the training.
