World Environment Day (WED) is the main channel through which the UN raises global awareness and action for the environment. Over time, it has evolved into a global public awareness platform, widely celebrated in over 100 countries. It also serves as the "peoples’ day" for positive environmental action and for transforming individual action into a collective force that generates a positive exponential impact on the planet.
In support of the UN’s designation of 2014 as the International Year of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), the WED theme is devoted to SIDS in the broader context of climate change. We aim to build momentum ahead of the Third International Conference on SIDS in September and enhance understanding of the importance and urgency of SIDS in helping to protect islands in the face of growing risks and vulnerabilities, especially those brought on by climate change. We believe WED provides a great opportunity to appeal for solidarity with the islands. Read more...
