The SNV REDD+ Corner, Issue #5, October 2014 :...Converting palm oil into clean energy: A waste-to-energy process through the re-utilisation of POME...New publication: An approach to promote REDD+ compatible wood-fuel value chains...
In this edition of the newsletter we give particular attention to the use of biomass for energy consumption. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 93 per cent of households in rural areas rely on wood-fuel as the primary energy source. SNV has developed an approach to better understand the wood-fuel value chain and to target interventions in ways that reduce forest degradation and alleviate poverty. We are also looking at how agricultural waste can be converted to energy production. In this edition we also outline the country-led safeguards approach – new guidelines shaping safeguards thinking and action which are gaining interest from many countries.

New publication: An approach to promote REDD+ compatible wood-fuel value chains |
Wood based fuels remain the primary energy source for households in developing countries. The extraction of wood for fuel can lead to encroachment into forested areas and has been identified as one of the principal drivers of forest degradation in national programmes on REDD+, particularly for Sub-Saharan Africa. Wood-fuel can potentially be a renewable energy and a critical income source for the poor, if managed properly. Read more... |

Country-led safeguards approach-new guidelines shaping safeguards thinking and action |
Last month saw the launch of the New York Declaration on Forests, which committed progressive governments, industry and civil society to halve the loss of natural forests by 2020 and strive to end it by 2030. |
Many developing countries are currently grappling with the challenges of how to implement their national REDD+ strategies. Subnational-level planning – across provinces, states or districts, etc. - is emerging as the leading approach to operationalising national REDD+ programmes by catalysing sustainable productive landscapes.
