The SNV REDD+ Corner, Issue #5, October 2014 :...Converting palm oil into clean energy: A waste-to-energy process through the re-utilisation of POME...New publication: An approach to promote REDD+ compatible wood-fuel value chains...

In this edition of the newsletter we give particular attention to the use of biomass for energy consumption. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 93 per cent of households in rural areas rely on wood-fuel as the primary energy source. SNV has developed an approach to better understand the wood-fuel value chain and to target interventions in ways that reduce forest degradation and alleviate poverty. We are also looking at how agricultural waste can be converted to energy production. In this edition we also outline the country-led safeguards approach – new guidelines shaping safeguards thinking and action which are gaining interest from many countries.

Turning residues to wealth: SNV's Biomass Waste-to-Energy toolkit outlines promises
Renewable energy in the form of biomass residues is becoming increasingly important as countries realise that residues offer a solution to international commitments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and bridge up the energy demand and supply gap in the coming years.

Converting palm oil into clean energy: A waste-to-energy process through the re-utilisation of POME
Palm oil mill effluent, shortly POME, is known as the most environmentally damaging by-product of the milling process of palm oil. POME is a hot, oily and acidic run-off liquid, which consists of nutrients and plant debris and produces significant amounts of methane gas. SNV is testing a technology to turn POME into energy.

New publication: An approach to promote REDD+ compatible wood-fuel value chains
Wood based fuels remain the primary energy source for households in developing countries. The extraction of wood for fuel can lead to encroachment into forested areas and has been identified as one of the principal drivers of forest degradation in national programmes on REDD+, particularly for Sub-Saharan Africa. Wood-fuel can potentially be a renewable energy and a critical income source for the poor, if managed properly.
