The Climate Commission for the Sahel Region gathered for a round table meeting which raised 3.41 billion in funding for the Sahel Region Climate Investment Plan (SR-CIP 2018-2030) and the Priority Program for Catalyzing Climate Investments in the Sahel (PPCI 2020-2025). The round table was organized by the Government of the Republic of Niger on behalf of the Climate Commission for the Sahel Region with the support of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Chair of the Technical and Financial Partners of the SR-CIP.
The gathering aimed to rally the Sahel’s region’s technical and financial partners around the SR-CIP, to present the contents of the documents and enlist their support in funding the envisaged development programs. The meeting came on the heels of the Heads of State Summit which validated the respective tools on Monday. The investment plan, an operational tool covering the period 2018-2030, is designed to implement the Marrakesh Declaration and the vision whose overarching aim is support the global effort to mitigate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and strengthen the Sahel region’s adaptation capacities and resilience to climate change.
Of the requested USD 1.32 billion in funding, USD 3.41 billion were collected in the form of pledges. Promises of assistance were made by the World Bank, to the tune of USD 1.5 billion; the European Union, USD 750 million, France, USD 250 million; AfDB, USD 1.3 billion, IFAD, USD 200 million and the Swiss Cooperation, USD 75 million.
Morocco also pledged to conduct studies ahead of the implementation of the Climate Investment Plan and announced that the Commission would receive support from the “4C Maroc” Climate Change Skills Center, particularly geared towards building the capacities of its members. In a similar move, FAO, UNEP, CIF, IFDD and regional and sub-regional organizations present at the meeting reiterated their availability to support the implementation of the SR-CIP and the PPCI.
The Sahel geo-climatic region comprises 17 countries stretching from the Atlantic to the Red Sea. These include Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Guinea Conakry, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan and Chad.
