Research Note: Eco-design of self-condensed tannin-based adhesives: A viable economic solution?

Tannins are chemical compounds that are widely distributed in all plant species. In the search for adhesives with low environmental footprints, tannins provide a great option. Tannin, although derived from forest industry residues, is relatively expensive, with costs in the order of $ 1,900 / tonne. This work explores the economic aspects of the development of self-condensed tannin-based adhesives. It has been observed that the high production costs of adhesives are largely attributable to the price of tannin. However, this study demonstrates at a cost of $ 1,900 / tonne of dry tannin extracts, the industrial production of self-condensed tannin-based adhesives could be profitable in Canada.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
