Position Paper of the Network of Parliamentarians for the Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPAR) on the REDD + Mechanism
We the members of the “Network of Parliamentarians for the Sustainable Management of Forest Ecosystems in Central Africa (REPAR)” meeting in Nkolandom (Ebolowa), Cameroon, at the information and awareness workshop on the role and place of Parliamentarians in the implementation of Climate Change and REDD+ processes, representing the countries below: Burundi, Congo, Gabon, Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sao Tome and Principe, Chad and Cameroon;
Recognizing that climate change is a global scourge; Noting its adverse effects on the livelihoods of populations;
Cognizant of the vital role of Congo Basin forests in balancing the global climate; Aware of the need for sustainable management of the Congo Basin, the second largest tropical forest area;
Considering that the mechanism for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation (REDD +) serves to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, taking into account conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks;
Noting that 'REDD + is a tool for sustainable development';
Convinced that the involvement and participation of all actors is a prerequisite for the success of this mechanism.
