FAO presents advances in participatory forestry in Central Africa achieved by three projects funded by Global Environment Fund and remaining issues.
In line with the international commitments and policies of Central African States relating to biodiversity conservation and food and nutritional security of people who depend on forest products for their livelihoods, a few Central African countries are taking part in pilot tests aimed at demonstrating the likelihood of participatory management being a viable option towards preserving the functioning, integrity and biodiversity of forest ecosystems in the Congo Basin.
The pilot tests were conducted in part within the framework of the following GEF co-financed projects and implemented with the technical support of the FAO:
- Sustainable management of fauna and the bushmeat sector in Central Africa
- Integrated management of mangrove ecosystems in the Republic of Cameroon
- Integrated management of mangrove ecosystems in the Republic of Congo
The side-event thus provided an opportunity for more than 80 people to gain insights and discuss key findings and lessons learned from these projects.
