environews-rdc-Actualités, Forests: Kinshasa and Brazzaville agree to protect Cuvette centrale peatlands
The Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development of the DRC, Amy Ambatobe, and his counterpart in the Republic of Congo, Arlette Sudan Nonault met in Kinshasa on Saturday and discussed the need to make a coordinated effort to protect and enhance the peatlands which researchers recently discovered in the DRC and in the Republic of Congo.
The working session which brought experts from both Congos to the table, allowed both nations to plan joint efforts aimed at enhancing the peatlands for the benefit of the local people as well as the entire planet. More importantly, plans were made to attract substantial amounts of funding to help protect these huge carbon reserves which are the largest in the world.
In a joint communiqué released at the end of the Kinshasa meeting, the two Ministers reaffirmed their commitment to work together to protect the peatlands which play a vital role in carbon storage.
They also pledged to continue raising awareness among the Congolese people on the importance of peatlands as well as the need to protect them.
