Welcome to CBFP's new member: Norway
2 October 2009, Oslo/Bonn - Norway confirms its wish to join the partnership in order to embrace its growing engagement in the Congo Basin region.
Norway's letter of adherence, formally submitted to the German Facilitation of CBFP, outlines its committment to support COMIFAC's regional action plan (Plan de Convergence) as laid down in the Cooperation Framework. Aud-Marit Wiig (Director General at the Foreign Ministry's Department for Regional Affairs and Development) refers to her country's leading role in developing and allocating innovative finance mechanisms with the objectif to guarantee forest protection and sustainable development in the Congo Basin. Norway has established a national REDD fund for financing, among others, the Congo Basin Forest Fund (100 Million US$), the World Bank’s Forest Investment Program (150 Million US$) UN-REDD (52 Million US$) and the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (40 Mio US$). The Norwegian government also offers direct support to major environmental NGOs and their local partners, many of them already members of CBFP.
