FERN-Project CoNGOs: Discussing a new paradigm for Community Forestry (Douala)
Partners of the CoNGOs project discuss a new paradigm for community forestry at the CBFP Meeting of Parties in Douala.
During the 17th annual Meeting of Partners of the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP) in Douala, Cameroon, Fern organized a side event on inclusive management of Congo Basin forests. The aim was to look at the role of community forestry in improving forest and climate governance based on the sub-region’s experience in collaboration with partners of the CoNGOs project, including Cameroon’s Center for Environment and Development (CED); the Forum for Governance and Human Rights in the Congo (FGDH) and the Center for Environmental Information and Sustainable Development (CIEDD) of the Central African Republic.
The overall objective of the meeting was to gain a better understanding of the linkages between community forestry and forest and climate governance, by considering areas reserved for community forests as potential areas both to strengthen forest governance in a 'Landscape' perspective and protect the rights of indigenous and local communities. The meeting allowed for fruitful exchanges of views around the presentations delivered by partners of the CoNGOs project and Climate Analytics. A forum was created by USAID for specific communication on the challenges arising from a decade of implementation of community forestry in Cameroon.
