Libreville (Gabon), 30 November 2018- The 47th meeting of the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee on Security Questions in Central Africa (UNSAC) will take place from 3 to 7 December 2018 in N’Djamena, the capital of Chad. As in previous sessions, it will provide an opportunity to review the geopolitical and security situation in eleven member countries namely Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic (CAR), Congo, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe and Chad.
Participants will also review challenges to peace and stability at regional level including cross-border issues. In this connection, several issues will feature prominently in the discussions: maritime piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, the activities of terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), mercernarism and transnational organized crime, security threats related to pastoralism and transhumance. Regarding this last point, the Secretary General of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) will present draft community legislation. Reflection on this central issue will be further enhanced by the findings of an evaluation mission conducted in October by UNSAC, ECCAS and UNOCA in Sarh, Maro and Sido, which are sites located in the Chadian province of Moyen-Chari (on the border with the CAR)
