Journaldemontreal : More than a tonne of ivory, chopped into pieces, seized in Uganda

20 February 2017: KAMPALA - Ugandan authorities have seized more than a tonne of ivory, hacked into pieces and treated with a chemical to avoid detection by customs service dogs, the Ugandan wildlife protection service said on Monday.

The ivory was seized Saturday on the outskirts of Kampala, before it could be transferred via Entebbe international airport, located south of the capital, to an unknown destination. Two suspects from Guinea Bissau and a Liberian have been arrested in connection with the case in Kampala.

"In a joint operation conducted with police, we seized Saturday more than a tonne of ivory brought in either from the Tanzania or the Democratic Republic of the Congo" (DRC), AFP was told by Simplicious Gessa, a spokesman of the Ugandan wildlife protection service. "The operation is still ongoing."

Authorities believe that the smuggling network extends beyond the three men in custody, including customs officers or employees of export companies.
