According to a recent study of the species conducted by TRAFFIC, its vulnerability has reached alarming levels due to its overexploitation for food, handicrafts, traditional medicine and as a pet. The study reveals that between 1.5 and 2 million eggs are collected each year and 30 seizures were made between 2003 and 2013 with over 80,000 people involved. 8368 animals were recently discovered in several suitcases that were seized in Papua and Jakarta in January 2014 ...
