Morebooks: Comparative views on the Congo Basin forest ecosystems. What roles should actors and institutions play?

The authors’ comparative analysis of views spanning thirty years provide an understanding of the complexity of Congo Basin forest ecosystems. Based on Burundi’s experience and lessons learned from other initiatives in landscapes and the dynamics of managing sub-regional processes and initiatives, the authors underscore the importance of socio-economic development as a prerequisite for conservation of biodiversity as a whole.

They highlight Burundi's reforestation efforts in spite of persisting wood-energy problems, the importance of the landscape approach and difficulties in implementing strategies to curb and combat illegal wildlife exploitation in Congo Basin countries, governance within REDD + programs, the status of regional or sub-regional forest conservation and management initiatives and processes, and the relevant issue of effective involvement of indigenous peoples in the management of Congo Basin forest ecosystems.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
