Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo could host the 27th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP27) in 2021. The announcement was made by Congolese Minister of Foreign Affairs, She Okitundu, during the Climate gala held in Kinshasa by the French Embassy, on Wednesday 31 January. (…) He added that for the DRC, "hosting the COP27 in Kinshasa, will lend strong impetus to all the initiatives undertaken nationwide in a joint effort to curb the global causes of deforestation and poverty".

"We will soon submit Kinshasa’s bid to host the twenty-seventh Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP27) in 2021 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change" he announced. (…)

According to Mr. Okitundu, Kinshasa aims to strike a balance between the potential benefits forests can offer and the population’s economic and social development. This will be achieved by ensuring sound forest governance, preserving its invaluable heritage and achieving pre-defined objectives.

"For such a vast country as ours, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, better managing forests means improving the way we manage our territory, economy and future," he said.
