Great Green Wall Initiative: Players hold 2nd SAWAP / BRICKS conference
Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) - February 18 to 20, 2015: The 2nd conférence of the Sahel and West Africa Program (SAWAP) was held at the African Union headquarters, in support of the Great Green Wall Initiative (GGWI) and the Building Resilience through Innovation, Communication and Knowledge Services (BRICKS) Project. It aimed to ensure consistent implementation of activities and strengthen support for SAWAP countries in the effective implementation of their projects.
Delegates representing SAWAP projects, the World Bank, the BRICKS implementing agencies (IUCN, CILSS, OSS) and GGWI regional partners, shared their experiences in sustainable management of land and water resources. The conference was preceded by three thematic workshops (Monitoring and Evaluation and Geographic Information Systems, Best Practices and Communication) held from February 16 to 17, 2015. Specific national projects’ needs were identified and support approaches elaborated.
A tour of the Tigray region allowed participants to share experiences on soil and water restoration in three watershed communities (Tsigea, Wenalem and Keble Embahasti). The BRICKS project which came into force in November 2013, was launched on March 22 and 23, 2014 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
