International forest governance is an integral part of global policy debates on ways of preventing deforestation, illegal mining and unsustainable forestry practices. Africa is a leading producer of timber, though the region is plagued by a lack of capacity and difficulties in managing its forest sector. Based on network governance analysis, we explore the extent to which the evolution and interventions of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Central African Forests Commission ( COMIFAC) have helped to address governance issues. We assess the strengths and weaknesses of these two shining examples of international forest governance by introducing recent ideas and concepts from Africa. We conclude with a politically relevant discussion on how the FSC and COMIFAC can bolster the authority, legitimacy and effectiveness and improve forest governance in Africa and elsewhere in the world.

Forest defenders on the COVID-19 frontline stand ready to assist the global EU response – Fern

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
