France rushes to the rescue of Gabon in the fight against Elephant Poaching
The news was revealed following a cabinet meeting chaired by the Gabonese President, Ali Bongo ONDIMBA, on 16 January 2014, that France is to assist Gabon in anti-poaching measures to protect elephants in the Minkébé Park, through a grant worth 10 million euro, i.e. over 6 billion CFA francs...
Gabon’s efforts in protecting biodiversity are thus rewarded. Since elephant poaching intensified in the Congo Basin forests and the countries of the sub-region adopted an emergency plan to eradicate this evil, Gabon has been committed with the support of technical partners such as WCS. This grant is an evidence of actions already carried out in the field, and is expected to boost Gabon’s efforts in this fight.
This decision may be considered as a strong call to European countries and development agencies to join the battle against elephant poaching in the Central African area. Are they going to respond? Time shall tell …
