Senegal and Guinea-Bissau’s fisheries sectors now "secure"

Senegal and Guinea-Bissau signed Monday an agreement that will allow Senegalese fishermen to ply their trade in Guinea-Bissau's territorial waters, a measure which according to the signatories, guarantees "sustainable growth" in the sector.

Faced with a scarcity of fish in their territorial waters, owing mainly to overexploitation of resources, Senegalese fishermen are increasingly dependent on neighboring countries such as Mauritania and Guinea-Bissau.

Despite bilateral agreements, clashes have been reported between Senegalese fishermen and these countries’ coastguards for several years now.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
