Lemonde/ Akinwumi Adesina : "Africa should be feeding the world, not the other way round"

The Director of the African Development Bank has his sights set on agriculture, underscoring the fact that continent is home to 65 per cent of world’s uncultivated arable land.

Agriculture is his favorite topic. "That’s where I come from," Akinwumi Adesina, 57, often likes to say. On this wet afternoon in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), at the headquarters of the African Development Bank (ADB) which he has been heading for close to two years now, the former Nigerian Minister of Agriculture is ecstatic. The news is not official as yet but he just won World Food Prize 2017, the global food supply award (along with 250,000 dollars, equivalent to 223 000 Euro in prize money), which is sometimes considered the sector’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
