Organized by COMIFAC with GIZ support on Wednesday, September 9, 2015 from 7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., the side event drew close to sixty participants.  The central theme of the side event was: Integrated management and monitoring of forests in Central Africa rallies support" Experiences to share for effective governance of forests". The session provided the setting for sharing experiences in the Congo Basin on integrated management and monitoring of forests and for formulating recommendations and thoughts on issues relating to integrated management and monitoring of forests in Central Africa etc...

Informative note:

Sustainable forest management faces a major challenge; how to best serve its ecological, economic and social roles, while preserving its full potential for future generations.

To cope with this situation, the COMIFAC countries have opted for an inclusive approach to the management of their forests. Their approach based on consultation of all stakeholders (government, civil society, private sector, local populations) aims, among other things, to improve information on forests and integrate other ways to use the latter to ensure sustainable development.

Furthermore, the lessons learned from the twelve COMIFAC/CBFP landscapes clearly indicate that well managed protected areas can serve as an anchor point for sustainable management of natural resources in the great landscapes.

The landscapes can equally help optimize not only conservation but also development objectives, thereby providing education and employment for young people and securing the future of communities and wildlife in a context of climate change.

By the same token, the results of JICA  initiatives in the area of forest monitoring or the development of a sub-regional atlas on the use of forest lands are fed into OFAC for the implementation of its mandate for monitoring of forests in the Congo basin.

The overall aim of the session was to share experiences in the Congo Basin on integrated management and monitoring of forests and formulate recommendations and thoughts on issues relating to integrated management and monitoring of forests in Central Africa.
