DRC’s indigenous peoples await law protecting their rights
In a context where indigenous peoples suffer from all types of discrimination including the violation of their rights, a group of parliamentarians along with national and international civil society organizations and government officials have been working since 2009 introducing reforms to legislation on the protection of the rights of these peoples in the DRC.
The reform process underway in the DRC has been an inclusive and participatory one that has led to the drafting of legislation to promote and protect the basic rights of indigenous peoples. The bill is currently awaiting deliberation at the National Assembly. By passing this law, the DRC will become the second country in the Central African sub-region to adopt a legal instrument that recognizes and protects the rights of indigenous peoples, thereby setting an example for other countries in the sub region to follow.
