CIFOR: Is REDD+ coming to the rescue of forest concessions? A financial analysis of the main land use modes in the Congo Basin

Abstract:
In Central Africa, while logging under sustainable management was the predominant form of forest area management for many decades, several concurrent activities were taking ever-growing proportions. This is particularly true for industrial and peasant agriculture. In Cameroon, in the medium term there are 10 forest concessions, forest reserves and 14 national parks which 6 that stand to impacted by the expansion of existing agribusiness plantations. The scope of the phenomenon is lesser in Congo with only two significant cocoa and oil palm development projects. Many players welcome the agricultural expansion, even at the expense of forests. One of the reasons for this popularity is the lucrative nature of this type of land use: logging a hectare of forest appears to be far less profitable than the cultivation of most cash crops. The current price of a ton of carbon on international markets, the implementation of a REDD + mechanism in concessions only marginally alter the financial profitability of forest management: the REDD + mechanism does not currently equip forest concessions to better withstand this type of agricultural pressure ...
