CBFP Updates: April 2014 / Nouvelles du PFBC: avril 2014

Dear Partners,

I have just returned from a very productive visit to the Great Lakes region, with stops in Brazzaville and Brussels.  Here is a brief overview of news and observations of interest to the CBFP partners:

 1.       A clear highlight was our visit to the transboundary forest area of the Kibira and Nyungwe National Parks in Burundi and Rwanda.  I was deeply impressed by the level of cross-border cooperation seen between the Rwandan and Burundian authorities and partners, including WCS.  I was pleased to learn about an April 17 meeting of local leaders that will be convened to discuss regional forest conservation. The CBFP Facilitation plans to share the proceedings of this important gathering as soon as they are available.  In the meanwhile, we have uploaded photos and information from the trip to these links: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Congo-Basin-Forest-Partnership/424394764326797  and http://pfbc-cbfp.org/actualites/items/burundi-facilitation-fr.html

2.       Two members of the Facilitation Team were received by Burundi’s Président, S.E. Pierre Nkuruziza on March 20, 2014.  In this engaging encounter, we highlighted the opportunities for Burundi to show regional leadership in assuming the COMIFAC Presidency.  In response, President Nkuruziza affirmed his support for forest conservation and his desire to strengthen national environmental protection.  In addition, we had numerous exchanges with other government officials, CBFP partner representatives, and a range of Burundi civil society leaders.  Additional information and images may be found on the CBFP website: www.pfbc-cbfp.org.  I would also like to hear directly from any partners interested in supporting conservation opportunities in Burundi for a possible telephone briefing later in April.

3.       While in Brazzaville, the Facilitation Team met with Minister of Forests, Djombo Henri, who concurred with our proposal to hold the next CBFP meeting in Brazzaville on September 10-11, 2014. The partners meeting will be preceded by a workshop for civil society, climate negotiators and the Congo Basin Media Network (RECEIAC).  Minister Djombo also intends to hold a high level meeting just after the partners meeting.   We expect to announce the open registration for the 14th CBFP meeting soon.

4.       We are delighted to share that Mlle. Marie Tamoifo, Coordinator of the youth network REJEFAC, was selected to lead a webchat on international media platforms on Thursday, April 17.  Click for details: https://www.facebook.com/geninnov/photos/a.376629439049605.84416.371681652877717/676459835733229/?type=1&theater

5.       Next week, the U.S. Facilitation will hold the first teleconference of the CBFP Advisory Council, a dedicated group that will advise the Facilitation for the remainder of the U.S.-led term (to 2015).  Its members were drawn from the partnership’s many sectors, and include representatives of COMIFAC and other multilateral bodies, civil society and CEFDHAC networks, the CBFP consortium, NGOs and the private sector.

Best regards and I look forward to speaking with you again very soon,

Matthew V. Cassetta

Facilitator, Congo Basin Forest Partnership

Cher(e) Partenaire,
