- "Africa stands to lose a fifth of its elephants in the next decade if current poaching rates are maintained," this statement was part of the conclusion of a report released Monday at the opening of a ministerial conference on elephant survival held in Gaborone from 2 to 4 December 2013.

 
The high-level summit on the survival of African elephants was hosted by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Botswana Government to coordinate the fight against poachers and traffickers whose activities have intensified, fueled by strong Asian demand.

 
At the end of the important gathering, a strong statement, dubbed urgent measures from the African Elephant Summit (Gaborone, Botswana, 2-4 December 2013) was adopted by more than thirty states, including China and Vietnam. The 14-point declaration, aims to rally «political support at the highest level "against poaching and ivory trafficking. On 3 December, six countries signed the text in Gaborone, 25 others will follow suit formally later on). The text is available for download in English and French.
