High-level African conference on the green economy held in Oran in Algeria

 

"Mohamed Benahmed" Conventions Center, ORAN- (Algeria) - 22 and 23 February 2014 - An African conference on the green economy was held under the chairmanship of His Excellency Abdelmalek Sellal, Prime Minister. The Oran conference assembled thirty African Ministers of the Environment and Sustainable Development, and representatives of international organizations and institutions, the United Nations University, the World Bank, regional banks, specialized bodies of the United Nations   and the African Union working in the fields of environment, nutrition and health.

 


 
The opening ceremony was marked by speeches by the representative of the African Union, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Mr. Achim Steiner, the honorary president of the Rio +20 network, Mr. Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Minister of Territorial Management and the Environment, Mrs. Dalila Boudjemâa. The opening address was delivered by His Excellency Abdelmalek Sellal,   Prime Minister of Algeria.

 

 
The conference is part of efforts in the fight against poverty and the promotion of sustainable development based on a green economy and provided a platform for discussions on the African concept of the green economy, in a fast changing international context.

 

 
At the end of the conference, joint commitments were adopted towards environmental protection and the development of a green economy in Africa which is hard hit by the effects of global warming, and faces high population growth and urbanization rates that require sustainable development policies.

Development and institutionalization of a PAFC certification system for the Congo basin: opening of the second public consultation on Sustainable Forest Management Certification Standard, 23 May 2020 - 22 June 2020

This second public consultation will be open for a period of 30 days from tomorrow Saturday the 23rd of May 2020 and will be closed on Monday the 22nd of June 2020. The public consultation is open to all stakeholders of forest management in the Congo Basin interested in participating to the PAFC Congo Basin certification standards development process.

Forest defenders on the COVID-19 frontline stand ready to assist the global EU response – Fern

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
