Ramsar: World Wetlands Day, 2 February 2018
The theme chosen by the Standing Committee of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands to celebrate 2018 World Wetlands Day is: Wetlands for a Sustainable Urban Future.
On 2 February, we celebrate World Wetlands Day in recognition of the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands, on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar, by the Caspian Sea.
Each year since 1997, the event provides an opportunity for government agencies, non-governmental organizations and citizen groups at all levels of society to conduct public awareness campaigns on the value and benefits of wetlands in general, and the Ramsar Convention in particular.
