We Effect and FAO on World Forestry Congress
September 10, 2015 · Development Cooperation/News and stories/Rural Development · No comments
The 14th World Forestry Congress is underway in Durban, South Africa. On Friday, the launch of the collaboration between We Effect and FAO will take place.
Opening remarks on this new partnership will be held by Eva Muller (FAO) and George Onyago (We Effect). Comments and remarks will also be delivered by other speakers, such as Jerker Thunberg (SIDA), Mia Crawford (Senior Advisor to the Minister of Rural Affairs in Sweden) and Boaz Kiboi (Farm Forestry Smallholder Producer Association of Kenya).
The global forestry sector provides employment to over 50 million people. Many of them are banded together in community groups or producer organizations. However, these - along with many other smallholder family farmers – face a number of hurdles. They include weak tenure rights to land and forests, and often a lack of key skills that would help them make the most of their activities.
Addressing such challenges will be at the heart of the new partnership between We Effect and FAO. Under the partnership agreement, FAO and We Effect will reinforce their efforts at country level in support of rural smallholders and cooperatives in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
