UNFCCC Secretariat Launches Forest Information Hub. Voluntary, Verified Actions by Developing Nations
A new forest information hub is being launched by the UNFCCC secretariat today. Called the Lima REDD+ Information Hub, the platform contains a clear overview of verified actions that have been implemented voluntarily by developing countries to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation. Brazil is the first country to have an entry in the hub.
At the same time, the REDD+ Web Platform has been improved in order to enhance its user-friendliness and functionality. It’s now even better suited to serve as a one-stop-shop for information, experiences and lessons learned on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries (referred to as REDD+), shared by Parties, organizations and other stakeholders.
Forests play a crucial role in achieving a sustainable future. To increase pre-2020 climate action that bends the emissions curve this decade and puts the world on course to a carbon-neutral global economy in the second half of the century, land use strategies that safeguard forest resources are often an excellent option with significant potential to help meet these goals.
Further, the Paris agreement is poised to be a blueprint for climate-safe development, requiring every country to come together, build on the good work done to date and set our global compass towards a long-term vision of a stable, secure future. Forests play a crucial role in accomplishing this goal.
