A new TRAFFIC report reveals a disturbing new shift in how organized criminal networks smuggling rhino horn from South Africa are operating to avoid detection.
Recent seizures have revealed that criminal networks of Chinese origin have begun processing rhino horn in Africa into beads, bangles, disks and powder. This development emphasizes the need for an urgent response from governments and enforcement agencies to adapt to the new threats posed to African rhinos by this shift in criminal strategy.
The report was produced by TRAFFIC under a project aiming to Reduce Trade Threats to Africa’s Wild Species and Ecosystems. The project is funded by Arcadia—a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin.
