CIB Certificate Suspension Lifted
16 April 2015 (Bonn, Germany) – FSC confirms the lifting of the suspension of an FSC certificate owned by Congolaise Industrielle des Bois (CIB), a subsidiary of Olam International, for its Pokola and Kabo forest management units in the Republic of Congo (Brazzaville). The certificate was reinstated on 30 March 2015 following a temporary suspension.
The suspension was partly related to the government not implementing a regulation on hunting permits in the Republic of Congo. However, the relevant government ministry took immediate action to resolve the issue when they became aware of the suspension. The resolution was achieved through collaboration between the ministry and other stakeholders, including environmental NGOs and CIB-OLAM.
The newly reinstated Pokola and Kabo certificate is one of two CIB certificates in Northern Congo, and covers an area of just over 712,000 hectares. This brings the total area in the Republic of Congo covered by FSC certification to almost 2.5 million hectares, placing the Republic of Congo in the group of top 10 countries with the highest FSC-certified forest area in the world.
