ITTO-CITES Near Infrared Spectroscopy NIRS for the monitoring of Mahogany trade
The video illustrates the application of Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) for wood identification, which is now being used as a pilot basis in Brazil for identification of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), thanks to the technical and financial support of ITTO, under the ITTO–CITES Programme for Implementing CITES Listings of Tropical Tree Species. Mahogany, a species listed under CITES Appendix II, can be easily be confused with 15 similar tree species using conventional anatomic analysis, such as crabwood (Carapa guianensis), cedar (Cedrela odorata) and curupixá (Micropholis melinoniana).
The benefits of NIRS include accurate, practical and prompt timber identification in the field and at check points across the timber supply chain thus facilitating the enforcement of CITES and improving market transparency.
