The Novacel Kwamouth South Agro-forestry Project (NSK), funded by the Congo Basin Forest Fund (CBFF), was launched in 2011. The NSK project aims to curb deforestation on the Batéké plateaus by promoting sustainable agroforestry techniques and strengthening people’s economic livelihoods, including basic social services.
The establishment of the community-based co-operative and economic interest group Téké (GICET) addresses the challenge of ensuring sustainability of investments by the project NSK whose first funding cycle expires in 2016. The cooperative’s chief aim is to sustain and extend the dynamic effect of economic exchanges on the Batéké plateaus by developing environment-friendly agriculture. Its creation addresses structural difficulties farmers face, such as land tenure insecurity, lack of management of soil fertility, lack of transport infrastructure, restricted access to modern agricultural inputs and basic social services such as education and health care. The co-operative format also meets the need to promote solidarity at community level.
