SWM Program - Newsletter Issue 2 - April to June 2019

The second issue of the newsletter of the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme has just been published. This issue presents the latest progress in the implementation of the programme during the second quarter of 2019 across the thirteen countries covered by the Programme in the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of States. It is available for download here

More specifically, in Central Africa, the recent activities include:

- The sites in Gabon, Congo and DRC have adapted and implemented a protocol for Free, Informed and Prior Informed Consent (FPIC), which will help identify the communities interested in becoming Programme partners;

- the launch of studies in Gabon, Congo and DRC on the value chains of wild and domestic meat products, the state of wildlife populations and hunting pressure for species commonly hunted;

- In Chad, the launch of waterbird counts (land, air and water) in several wetlands (Fitri lake, Zakouma National Park, part of the Bahrs Aouk and Salamat Ramsar site) and hunting monitoring prior to the implementation of a Management Approach Oriented by Monitoring Systems (MOMS). These are part of the RESSOURCE project (Strengthening Expertise in Sub-Saharan Africa on Birds and their Rational Use for Communities and the Environment).

As a reminder, the SWM Programme is an initiative of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States, financed by the European Union under the 11th EDF and co-financed by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) through the RESOURCE project. It has being implemented by a consortium of four partners including: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Centre for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD), the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Technical partners in the RESSOURCE project include CIRAD, the French National Hunting and Wildlife Office (ONCFS), the European Institute for the Management of Wild Birds and their Habitats (OMPO), Wetlands International Africa (WIA), Birdlife International (BI) and the Tour du Valat Research Institute (TdV).
