National Sustainable Financing Strategy for Protected Areas for the Conservation and Enhancement of Biodiversity (SNFDAP/CVBD) of Cameroon adopted!

The meeting organized by the COMIFAC Executive Secretariat, in partnership with MINFOF/UNDP/GEF, had the overall objective of providing technical validation and ownership by stakeholders of Cameroon's NSSFPA and its Action Plan for the 2020-2024 period, as well as its communication strategy/plan.

At the end of the meeting, participants commended the efforts made for the development of the NSSFPA/CBDB and adopted it subject to the integration of comments and corrections received. In addition, the participants recommended that MINFOF receive the final version of Cameroon's National Strategy for the Sustainable Financing of Protected Areas for the Conservation and Valorization of Biodiversity (NSSFPA/CVBD) for the following steps of the process.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
