Brussels, 13 September 2018 - The Royal Belgian institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) has officially joined the Congo Basin Forest Partnership (CBFP). By so doing, RBINS has submitted the required documentation and agrees to abide by the cooperation framework of CBFP members to advance biodiversity conservation and sustainable management of forest ecosystems in Central Africa.

The Royal Belgian institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS) is one of the ten federal scientific establishments that are governed by the Belgian Science Policy Office (Belspo). It is involved in important scientific research activities and carries out public service missions.  

One in three people at the RBINS is a scientist. The scientific personnel includes mainly biologists, palaeontologists and geologists, but also oceanographers, anthropologists and archaeologists, as well as geographers, physicists, bioengineers and mathematicians, which enables us to conduct multidisciplinary research. The research is focussed on the following areas:

• Biodiversity and mechanisms involved in the evolution of life

• Land, freshwater and marine ecosystems

• History of life, the climate and human settlements

• Geology of Belgium and modelling the North Sea

Capacities for Biodiversity and sustainable development ...

CEBioS stands for ‘Capacities for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’. CEBioS is a programme of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), where it belongs to the Operational Directorate ‘Nature’. CEBioS is part of the ‘BIOPOLS’ group and is closely associated with the Belgian Focal Point to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).CEBioS stands for ‘Capacities for Biodiversity and Sustainable Development’.

CEBioS is a programme of the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (RBINS), where it belongs to the Operational Directorate ‘Nature’. CEBioS is part of the ‘BIOPOLS’ group and is closely associated with the Belgian Focal Point to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The CEBioS programme carries out capacity building for partners of the Belgian cooperation in the field of biodiversity conservation and sustainable management linked to poverty eradication. It works in the framework of international obligations of Belgium under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the EU biodiversity strategy to 2020 and the Belgian biodiversity strategy 2020.

The CEBioS programme is financed by the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation (DGD) through a protocol of cooperation between the Ministry of development cooperation and the Ministry of science policy. CEBioS mainly works in Africa, especially RD Congo, Burundi, Benin and also in Vietnam.
