A few days ago, we were appalled to learn of the cold blooded murder of an eco-guard of the Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature {ICCN) by poachers in the Burusi area of Garamba National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Furthermore, two days ago, an ICCN Conservator of the Itombwe natural reserve was tortured and murdered by poachers, after being ambush and kidnapped along with his colleagues.
As we face these horrifying and inhumane acts, I would like to extend heartfelt condolences on my own behalf and on behalf of all the actors of the RAPAC network, to the bereaved families and the ICCN for this incalculable loss. Nothing will ever replace brave conservation actors. To these despicable acts, we can only respond with our determination and solidarity.
To friends and actors of conservation in Central Africa, I appeal for greater engagement and support. Our conservators and field staff are often the last line of defense against wildlife crime whose magnitude, intensity, creativity and fierceness keeps growing exponentially every day.
Your concern, engagement and support for the cause of preserving our resources, wherever you are on earth, are needed, and even vital. For the precious lives we lose every day are an alarming sign of how difficult it is to rein in wildlife crime. It is by working together that we will eradicate it.
I would be appreciate it if each and every one of you could help spread the word about this call for solidarity and engagement around conservation in Central Africa.
Very kind regards to everyone
Anatolio NDONG MBA
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
of Equatorial Guinea to the United Nations- Board Chairman of RAPAC
