Documents of 3rd Meeting of Partners of the Global Peatlands Initiative

The 3rd technical Meeting of Partners of the Global Peatlands Initiative (GPI) opened on Wednesday in Brazzaville, in the presence of the Congolese Minister of Environment and Tourism, Arlette Sudan Nonault, and his counterpart from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Amy Ambotobe Nyongolo.

The 3rd Meeting of Partners of the Global Peatlands Initiative was entitled: “Valuing peatlands for people and the planet". It drew experts from the Member States of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Indonesia and Peru.

" This 3rd Meeting in Brazzaville is very important, since it comes on the heels of major global climate change events related to economic development and the emergence of the blue and green economy," said the Congolese Minister of Environment and Tourism, Arlette Soudan Nonault.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
