Last month, we shared with you the sad news of a dramatic poaching event in the park. We're glad to inform you that following a concerted response, 3 of the poachers involved in this 9-elephant incident near Goualougo, were arrested, sent to court and each issued with $10,000 USD fines and the maximum prison sentence of 5 years. To read more about this extraordinary result, see our press release and other news coverage.
This month, we are very excited to announce that we captured incredible video of a western lowland gorilla newborn living in the Park. The infant was barely a week old when the footage was shot at the end of February. The young baby gorilla is the offspring of Kingo—a male silverback gorilla well-known to researchers—and a female named Mekome. The infant was born on February 17th near the Mondika Research Center.
Our team of scientists estimate that the young gorilla was no more than a few hours old when they first observed the family group’s newest arrival. This rare footage was also shared by the BBC and National Geographic, spreading news of gorilla conservation in Nouabalé-Ndoki NP far and wide.
