On March 8th, to celebrate International Women's Day, women from Bomassa marched through the village during an event organized by the Bomassa Women's Association (AFUBB), followed by a volleyball tournament at the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park headquarters and a round table discussion on Women's Rights, held together with the Park's gender focal point.
Forty-five candidates arrived mid-month from various localities in the periphery of the Park to complete a pre-selection course in order to identify the recruits who will come to grow our ranks. The possibility was indeed offered to all villages and towns on the periphery of the Park to nominate candidates, and the PMU endeavoured to ensure fair and transparent process of the 200+ applications received from both Department of Sangha and la Likouala. Following the series of selection tests that took place over ten days, twenty-two new recruits, physically and intellectually fit to play the role of ecoguards, were selected to complete an official ranger training. This training session, which opened last Friday, includes refresher training for existing ecoguards of the Park.
Of the four female candidates given the opportunity to complete the pre-selection course three were recruited to take part in the official ranger training; one of whom was ranked in the top 15 recruits based on the results of the pre-selection tests.
