The main objectives of the meeting were to:

 

  1. Review available and possible funding in the light of the objectives of the N'Djamena conference and proposals submitted by working groups of the conference

 

 

  1. Identify internal and external, national and international sources to fuel a sustainable funding strategy for conservation in the region

 

 

  1. Seek ways to match donor-funded efforts with commitments of countries in the region

 

 

The discussions were centered around the following three themes:

 

  1. Oversight of transhumance
  2. Cross-border agreements
  3. Efforts made by States in the region to combat armed groups

Democratic Republic of the Congo

Main conclusions of the meeting

 

 

  1. The donors all expressed their willingness to support the countries in the region in their efforts to preserve this hotspot of global biodiversity

 

 

  1. All the donors have ongoing funding available for the countries in the region, particularly in the areas of:

 

  1. Training
  2. Preservation of protected areas
  3. Inclusive development
  4. Bilateral cooperation
  5. Transhumance
  6. The fight against trafficking

 

 

  1. All the region’s countries have also developed initiatives relating to the conference themes, especially through:
  2. Partnerships with donors
  3. Collaboration with international agencies and organizations
  4. Regional initiatives, such as cross-border agreements
  5. The existence of national environmental conservation funds

 

 

  1. The entire international community reiterated its commitment to extend and continue its financial and technical support to the countries of the region on these topics. They expressed the hope that these funding would be provided in a context of:
  2. Political commitment at the highest levels of government in countries in the region
  3. Requests submitted by the countries of the region themselves
  4. Results consistent with shared expectations

 

 

  1. In light of the initial round of views expressed, donors could consider pooling resources and setting up joint training courses in a cross-border context.

 

 

  1. It seems necessary for the donor community to lay the groundwork for regional reflection on the harmonization of existing legislation on the subject.

 

 

  1. The donors also wish to encourage and support the region’s countries in considering innovative sources / structures for sustainable funding for the fight against environmental crime, which could for example be housed within a project financing agency.

ATIBT co-facilitated the mobilization of the private sector of the timber sector to participate in the first meeting of the private sector college of Congo Basin Forest Partnership with the new facilitator Dr Christian Ruck and his team German Facilitation.

Development and institutionalization of a PAFC certification system for the Congo basin: opening of the second public consultation on Sustainable Forest Management Certification Standard, 23 May 2020 - 22 June 2020

This second public consultation will be open for a period of 30 days from tomorrow Saturday the 23rd of May 2020 and will be closed on Monday the 22nd of June 2020. The public consultation is open to all stakeholders of forest management in the Congo Basin interested in participating to the PAFC Congo Basin certification standards development process.

Forest defenders on the COVID-19 frontline stand ready to assist the global EU response – Fern

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.

The theme of the 2020 International Day for Biological Diversity is “Our Solutions are in Nature”. It shows that "Biodiversity remains the answer to a number of sustainable development challenges that we all face. From nature-based solutions to climate, to food and water security, and sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity remains the basis for a sustainable future."
