actualite.cd : DRC: 5 forest concessions’ contracts cancelled by the Minister of the Environment

The Minister of the Environment and Sustainable Development, Amy Ambatobe Nyongolo, announced Friday, 07 July 2017, during a press conference, that the contracts of 5 forest concessions had been cancelled. These include the Bâtisseurs duCongo Sarl Group, the Ondika group with two concessions, Isolado and Action for the Congo.

Minister Ambatobe’s stated that good forest governance is a top concern of his Ministry as it works to ensure that local communities benefit from their resources, to enable the forest to contribute to the country’s progress and development and to help people in the most remote areas achieve progress.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
