LANDSCAPE NEWS: Stronger political commitments, rural governance key to landscape restoration: One World – No Hunger envoy

NAIROBI (Landscape News) — We have the necessary technical knowledge to restore landscapes, said deputy director-general and commissioner for BMZ’s “One World – No Hunger” initiative on Wednesday.

“What is missing is stronger political commitment and better rural governance,” Stefan Schmitz told delegates at the Global Landscapes Forum conference in Nairobi during a plenary speech.

“This includes decentralizing decision-making, administrative capacities and financial resources; putting in place adequate territorial and tenure policies. Good governance is a prerequisite for sustainable rural development. People will only use resources sustainably provided they do not live in extreme poverty. If they have no choice, they will go on engaging in land degradation and deforestation.”
