environews -rdc -Conservation : Joseph Kabila incinerated more than a ton of elephant ivory in Kinshasa
The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Joseph Kabila Kabange, has symbolically incinerated more than one ton of elephant ivory and over a ton of pangolin scales. The incineration ceremony was held on Sunday, September 30, at the N'sele wildlife park, located close to the city of Kinshasa province.
"The DRC has today confirmed and reaffirmed its commitment to combating environmental crime. We wanted to show by this act that now the markets for ivory, parrots, and pangolin scales must be totally eradicated, "said the Director General of the ICCN (Congolese Institute for the Conservation of Nature) , Cosma Wilungula.
According to the ICCN DG, the incineration sends a strong message to poachers and smugglers around the world. At least 15 tons of ivory spikes were seized, derived from poaching and illegal trade in protected animal species in the DRC. "Fifteen tons of ivory amount to at least five thousand slaughtered elephants. We wanted to show that it is no use continuing to kill okapis, elephants, pangolins because they have no price, their value is zero, " he said.
