Welcome to this new edition of Infosylva. In a new publication launched at the Asia-Pacific Forestry Week, “Forty years of community-based forestry. A review of its extent and effectiveness”, FAO demonstrates the importance of community-based forestry as a tool to create employment and income within rural communities, and to foster sustainable forest management.

(In English, Spanish and French) Sustainable forest management is also at the centre of the debate in Latin America, where FAO highlights its importance in alleviating the pressure on forests from construction and land conversion for agriculture in particular. (In Spanish) In Equatorial Guinea, an FAO project supervised by the Forestry Commission of Central Africa (COMIFAC) and financed by the African Development Bank (ADB) through the Congo Basin Forest Fund (CBFF) is helping many rural people to domesticate wild mango trees, to increase their income from this non-wood forestry product, known locally as “andok”. (In English and French) A plan to save the endangered okapi from extinction in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (and elsewhere in Africa), has recently drawn attention to this shy and little-known relative of the giraffe.
