IUCN ready to effect its engagement with the Green Climate Funds and African countries
From 24 to 26 October 2016, an IUCN delegation from Headquarter, ESARO and PACO attended the first Green Climate Funds (GCF) structured dialogue with Africa. The objectives were to discuss a potential pipeline of projects with GCF and its national designated authorities or focal points and identify areas of IUCN support to African countries in order to increase their engagement with this Funds.
Through plenary and bilateral sessions with countries representatives, the GCF secretariat and other Accredited Entities, IUCN has shown its potential added value. Over twenty African countries showed interest to engage with IUCN as the Accredited Entity to support them developing strong portfolio on either coastal areas, dryland, forest restoration and inland water management, and adaptation to climate change.
This support is sought either as individual country or multiple countries. In addition, IUCN, the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the Secretariat of the GCF discussed on how to join efforts in supporting west African costal area. Next step is to properly plan how IUCN will effectively deliver on the countries GCFportfolio development in order to increase their access to the Green Climate Funds.
