N’Djamena, 23 October 2018: The Minister of State François-Xavier de Donnea, Facilitator of the Kingdom of Belgium for the Congo Basin Forest Partnership, the Executive Secretary of COMIFAC Mr Ndomba Ngoye Raymond and the Co-Facilitator, Mr Maxime Nzita met his Excellency Mr Idriss Deby ITNO, President of the Republic of Chad.
The main issue on the agenda of the audience was: the organization of the international ministerial conference on the fight against poaching and other cross-border criminal activities due to take place in N’Djamena from 23 to 25 January 2019.
The meeting highlighted:
- Chad’s interest in the conference and the hope that the meeting would come up with proposals for cross-border collaboration and operational projects at the level of the sub-region concerned.
- The express wish that the Conference would also devote attention to the impact of ecosystem deterioration around Lake Chad, on transhumance activities starting from Lake Chad extending to the rest of his country and other countries in the region. Oversight, in the broad sense, of pastoralism, land management, rehabilitation of ecosystems and pasture lands, transhumance and sedentarization should not lead to stigmatizing of herders. In the same vein, Chad’s willingness to provide all the necessary support to ensure the success of this key meeting was also underscored.
- The need for concrete operational actions and for a more integrated and intra and cross-border multithemed approach: Genuine and operational cross-border collaboration, ecosystem restoration and control of pastoralist herders.
- Consent was granted for the organization of the conference and emphasis placed on the urgent need to start coordinating with the local Committee and the Government to launch the preparations.
- The need for genuine donor commitment to the road map expected from N’Djamena.
- It is essential to strengthen cross-border exchanges between Chad and Cameroon regarding the situation in the Sena Oura national park
