"Today, on the International Day of Mother Earth, I appeal to all the peoples of the world to raise their voices. Speak on behalf of our planet, because she is our only home. Care for our Mother Earth so that she can continue to take care of us, as she has done for millennia." This is an appeal for the protection of our planet Earth sent out by the Secretary General of the United Nations Mr. Ban Ki -moon on the occasion of the celebration of International Earth Day on April 22.

 
The day was commemorated throughout the streets of the cities of nearly 180 countries by more than one billion people, in a context of burgeoning urban demographics across various countries with huge ramifications for biodiversity and the ecosystem brought on by human  activity which is a vehicle of greenhouse gas emissions, resulting from industrial development , automobiles, construction of road and maritime infrastructure and habitats at the expense of forests, thereby exacerbating global warming.

 
By entitling the celebration "Green Cities", the organizers were sending a message to the inhabitants of our planet, calling for a change in behavior and more efforts to help cities and communities around the world to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable future. This aim is consistent with the vision of the founding father of the event, U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, who encouraged students as early as 22 April 1970, to develop environmental awareness projects in their communities.

 
The International Earth Day serves as yet another opportunity to prompt mankind to step up to these responsibilities and reflect on environmental protection and the development of renewable energy.

 
Great hope is placed on future celebrations, which are expected to provoke change in Man’s attitude to the planet, so that one day people can take in long breaths of fresh air, free of the risk of catching a respiratory disease, hear the birds sing, watch flowers blossom, enjoy the gentle feel of the sun’s rays without the risk of sunburn, drink fresh water from our soil without fear of contamination and live in harmony with the ecosystem.
