Africatime : Ali Bongo Ondimba receives book on strategic planning of Gabon’s territory

The President of the Republic of Gabon, Ali Bongo Ondimba, received a book Thursday from the rector of Omar Bongo University (UOB), Professor Marc-Louis Ropivia, entitled "Coastal regions of Gabon -Thoughts on strategic territorial planning ", official sources say.

The fruit of interuniversity collaboration between the Omar Bongo (UOB) and Nantes Universities, conducted through the Laboratoire Littoral, Environnement, Télédétection, the 417-page book divided into 17 chapters, brought together 34 co-authors. It is articulated around two central themes: man’s relationship with his environment on the one hand and on the other hand, proposals for rational management of the maritime territory with a view to sustainable development.

These efforts go hand in hand with ensuring continued responsible management of natural resources and preventing unsustainably and illegally sourced forest commodities. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, forest-monitoring organisations Observatoire de la Gouvernance Forestière (OGF) and Réseau des observateurs indépendants des ressources naturelles (RENOI) are set to carry out COVID awareness-raising in at-risk forest areas, and will also assess COVID’s impact on forest management and governance commitments under the Central African Forest Initiative (CAFI). Across the Congo Basin, fears that a proper lack of oversight may put forests and forest peoples in danger are looming despite emerging initiatives.
